Some key members of Congress – the ones that develop the Department of Homeland Security’s funding bill – believe the Transportation Security Administration is “unnecessarily” withholding “information that should be in the public domain.” It blames “insufficient management controls,” in the over-designation of “sensitive security information” and directs that agency put specialists in key positions to decide what information should be designated as SSI, making it exempt from disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act. It also asks for annual reporting on documents withheld. (10/6/05)
