Archivist Calls Moratorium on Reclassification of Records

The National Archives called a “moratorium” on reclassification after learning that the CIA and other intelligence agencies had secretly removed more than 55,000 pages of previously declassified historical records from its shelves and reclassified the information. Archivist Allen Weinstein asked that all of the removed materials be returned. He said an audit would be conducted to determine which, if any, should be reclassified, as the intelligence agencies maintain. (3/3/06)
