Classification Drops for First Time Since 2001; Slight Declassification Gain

The classification of government documents fell in 2005 for the first time since 2001, the Information Security Oversight Office reported. It said declassification recovered slightly after a severe drop in 2004 but still remains well below prior year levels. ISOO said the government made 14.2 million classification decisions in 2005 compared with 15.6 million in 2004, a nine per cent drop. It attributed the decline to “better diligence in the management of their information security programs.” (5/25/06)
