The Homeland Security Appropriations Bill (HR 5441) that has gone to the House provides for automatic release of records designated as Sensitive Security Information three years after being stamped SSI unless the information is still part of an active security plan or the records are re-designated by the DHS secretary. The White House has objected claiming it “jeopardizes” the security effort and that review of the documents would be “burdensome.” (5/31/06)
