Schumer Files Bill to Prevent the Posting of Social Security Numbers
· Story link
Sen. Charles Schumer, D-NY, has filed a bill (S3514) that would make it unlawful for the states and all their political subdivisions, including the courts, to post the last four numbers of anyone’s Social Security Number on the Internet. A number of states have retained public use of the last four numbers while making the first five confidential. The bill cites identity fraud as a basis for the restrictions and sets a $5,000 a day penalty for any government unit that doesn’t comply. (6/16/06)
