New York, Los Angeles Editors: Why We Published the Banking Story

The decision by the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and other newspapers to publish stories on the government counterterrorism program that examines international banking transactions, including those of thousands of Americans, brought criticism from President Bush and administration officials, attacks by many in Congress and a House resolution urging media restraint. The executive editors of the two newspapers talk about their decisions to publish the story despite government requests not to do so. (7/1/06)
