Americans Believe Knowing’s Important, Even If It Hurts

Nearly two thirds of Americans believe recent media reports on the government’s secret bank records surveillance was information they needed to know, even though many though the disclosures may have hurt national security interests, a new Pew Research Center for People and the Press survey showed. Only 28% said the public didn’t need to know about the bank records monitoring. Half of those polled thought the information may have hurt American interests. The findings split most noticeably along party and age lines. (8/8/06)
