California’s General Assembly, by a 60-1 vote, approved a bill that will allow journalists to interview prison inmates. The legislation, which goes to the Senate, also prohibits prison officials from eavesdropping on and tape recording the interviews. The approval followed a report that the corrections department memo instructed prison officials to hide a story from a legislator about the housing of sex offenders in his district. (8/15/06)
