Florida Chief Justice Moves to Reverse Secret Trial Practices

Florida Chief Justice R. Fred Lewis directed the chief judges in the state’s 20 judicial circuits to immediately establish rules for reviewing sealed or hidden court cases. He also asked for a report on the status of the circuit’s review of sealed cases and court records. The chief justice’s actions came in response to Miami Herald reports about secret trials and closed records and he told the paper, `To have such hiding occur — that’s not America, is it?” (10/10/06)
