The top two members of the House Judiciary Committee have urged the Justice Department to withdraw its subpoenas for two San Francisco Chronicle reporters facing 18 months in jail for refusing to respond to the subpoenas and reveal their sources for stories on the BALCO sports doping case. Rep. John Conyers, D-MI, and Rep. Tom Davis, R-VA, said the subpoenas were “troubling” both on the facts of the case and “the great damage they would cause to our nation’s press and the First Amendment.” (1/19/07).
