Ethics Office Wants Candidate Blind Trusts Made Public

The federal Office of Government Ethics wants former Republican Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Republican Sen. John McCain to open up their blind family trusts because they were not set up under the agency’s standards. The trusts were created so the officials could avoid conflicts of interest between their financial holdings and their official acts. Now the holdings will be in plain sight for the public – and the candidates – to see. (5/28/07)
