Citing Privacy, Judge Says Data on 900,000 Employees Can Be Withheld

A federal judge in Syracuse refused to release names and salary information on 900,000 federal employees to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, based at Syracuse University. Judge Norman Mordue said privacy rights of the employees, and terrorism concerns, outweighed the public’s interest in having comparative data. TRAC has been posting the data since 1989 but said in the lawsuit that the Office of Personnel Management began refusing records covering some employees in 2003. (10/17/89)
