'Time' appeals $110 million verdict

Time Magazine asked the Indonesian supreme court to reconsider an earlier ruling that ordered the publication to pay former President Suharto more than $100 million last year, the New York Times reports.

Last August, a panel of three Indonesian supreme court justices, including a former general that once said that he owed his career to Suharto, said that the magazine libeled Suharto by reporting that he and his family amassed a fortune of more than $15 billion while in office. Before he died last month, Transparency International, a global corruption organization, estimated Suharto’s worth at $15 to $35 billion. His salary when he left office was less than $2,000 per month. 

Two lower courts previously ruled in Time’s favor before the first panel of supreme court justices reversed those decisions. In addition to paying Suharto, the panel also required Time to apologize for the article.
