Newspaper gets list of withheld documents
The Iowa City Press-Citizen is forging ahead with an open records suit against the University of Iowa.
In response to an ongoing records request, the newspaper this week received a log of information the university is withholding from it related to an alleged sexual assault involving the university’s football players.
An Iowa judge in the case, which was filed in January, ordered the school to disclose to reporters and their attorneys the list to help determine whether the entire package of records should be released.
The log cites federal and state privacy laws and attorney-client privilege in withholding the 3,200 actual documents it lists. The documents include notes from the university’s athletic department staff on the day of the alleged sexual assault, a summary of the incident sent to university housing officials and letters from the mother of the alleged victim to university officials.
An independent report released Thursday found the University of Iowa mishandled the investigation into the sexual assault.
