Letter Regarding News Media Requests to Interview Reality Winner

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press sent a letter to the warden of the federal prison housing inmate Reality Winner to urge him to permit members of the news media to interview to Winner. Winner was the first person sentenced under the Espionage Act under the current administration for unauthorized disclosures of classified information to a news outlet. The letter explains that the public has a strong interest in hearing directly from Winner now that she is incarcerated, and that news reporting on and interviews with inmates like Winner help the public gain a greater understanding of the criminal justice system.
