Ways to support the Reporters Committee

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press provides pro bono legal representation, amicus curiae support, and other legal resources to protect First Amendment freedoms and the newsgathering rights of journalists. Donations to the Reporters Committee help to protect the right to gather and distribute news; to keep government accountable by ensuring access to public records, meetings, and courtrooms; and to preserve free speech and a free press, as guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. If you have questions about supporting our work, please contact Director of Development Michael Zwirn at giving@rcfp.org.

Make a one-time contribution

Use our secure link to make a contribution and support our mission. Your dollars directly translate to free legal services for journalists across the country. You can also make your contribution in honor of or in memory of someone.

Donations to the Reporters Committee enable our attorneys to go to court to defend journalists, litigate for open records and transparency, and advocate for press freedom with policymakers. Your contributions remove obstacles that chill newsgathering and block reporters from delivering the news we rely on, and fund a free legal hotline and online resources available to journalists seven days a week.

Become a monthly donor

Become a monthly sustaining donor to the Reporters Committee and help fund our work in the courts year-round. Bonus: Monthly donors receive a fun, comfortable pair of Reporters Committee customized socks. Sign up here to become a sustaining supporter!

Give via donor-advised fund

Giving via your donor-advised fund is fast, secure, and efficient. Use this link to provide details about your intended grant to the Reporters Committee from your donor-advised fund. This information makes it easier to locate your gift when it arrives, thank you for your support, and ensure your gift goes to the right place.

Donate gifts of stock

The Reporters Committee also accepts gifts of stock. When you gift stocks and other securities directly to a charity, you make an outsized impact without taking money directly out of your bank account. Plus, neither you nor the charity will be taxed on the gains for appreciated assets you donate.

Make a qualified charitable donation

Qualified charitable distributions, or QCDs, from your individual retirement account are a savvy way for donors over the age of 70 ½ to maximize their impact when supporting the Reporters Committee. QCDs may reduce your taxable income and help you meet a required minimum distribution.

Legacy giving: Ensuring a free press lives on

You’ve spent a lifetime fighting for and living the ideals of an open government and the freedoms of the First Amendment. Although media in America has changed from broadsheets and newspapers to radio, television, and new digital platforms, the core principle remains consistent: A free press is the most important resource to keep our democracy informed and engaged in our government and our society.

You can ensure that future First Amendment fighters have the legal support they need by remembering the Reporters Committee in your estate planning. Learn more about legacy giving.
