David Lauter

David Lauter, Washington Bureau Chief for the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and Tribune Publishing, has reported on California, national and international news for more than 35 years. He has covered parts of six presidential campaigns and has been bureau chief since 2011.

Lauter joined the Los Angeles Times as a Washington correspondent in 1987 after several years covering legal affairs and the U.S. Supreme Court for the National Law Journal. He became White House correspondent for the paper in 1988 and covered the administrations of George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

In 1995, Lauter moved to Los Angeles to become an editor. He oversaw coverage of the 1996 campaign cycle and subsequently served as deputy foreign editor, Metro editor and assistant managing editor.

Lauter graduated from Yale in 1979. He lives in Washington with his wife, Ann J. Gumbinner.
