Spy Agencies Will Trade Audits for Broad Surveillance Authority

In an effort to convince Congress to give the nation’s spy agencies permanent surveillance powers – such as setting up wiretap rooms in the nation’s phone and internet providers — the agencies will promise to audit themselves and give the information to select groups of Congress members, Assistant Attorney General Kenneth Wainstein said at a national security conference. The audits would be conducted by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Justice Department’s National Security Division. (9/12/07)
