Support RCFP with an IRA contribution
In the fight to protect America’s free press, qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) from your individual retirement account are a savvy way for donors over the age of 70 ½ to maximize their impact. Charitable contributions from your IRA may reduce your taxable income and help you meet a required minimum distribution.
To donate via your IRA, you may need to complete a financial form with your retirement account, either online or on paper.
Retirement account gifts are typically disbursed to the Reporters Committee or other qualified nonprofit organizations by check. These QCD checks may provide only limited information about the gift, and it can be difficult to match gifts with donors. We urge donors to contact us by email at giving@rcfp.org to let us know that a gift is coming from your account. By alerting us ahead of time, we know who sent the gift for recognition and tax purposes.
Information on IRA giving
Some general guidance about giving via your IRA:
- You must be 70 ½ or older to be eligible to make a QCD.
- QCDs are limited to the amount that would otherwise be taxed as ordinary income.
- The maximum annual QCD amount per individual is $105,000 (as of 2024). This applies to the sum of QCDs made to one or more charities in a calendar year. (If you and your spouse file taxes jointly, your spouse can also make a QCD in the same tax year for up to $105,000.)
- For a QCD to count toward your current year’s required minimum distribution, the funds must come out of your IRA by Dec. 31.
- Contributing to an IRA may result in a reduction of the QCD amount you can deduct.
If you have additional questions about contributing via your IRA, please consult your retirement account administrator.
If you don’t have an IRA, or prefer to give via credit or bank transfer, you can donate to the Reporters Committee online, or mail your contribution to: 1156 15th Street NW, Suite 1020 | Washington, D.C. 20005.
