The United States fell into a four-way tie for 53rd place on a world press freedom index compiled by Reporters Without Borders. The U.S. ranked 17th when the index was first compiled in 2002 but the steady deterioration of media relations with the Bush Administration and the refusal of the federal courts to recognize a reporter’s right to source confidentiality caused a drop in the rating.
